01 / 1964½–1973
First generation
The original Mustang launched as a 1965 model in April 1964, with early examples widely called “1964½.” Coupe, convertible and fastback body styles helped define its appeal. The era also brought GT, Shelby, Mach 1 and Boss performance variants.
02 / 1974–1978
Second generation · Mustang II
The smaller Mustang II responded to changing market conditions and fuel-economy concerns. Built on a different compact platform, it offered coupe and hatchback styles; a V8 returned later in the generation.
03 / 1979–1993
Third generation · Fox body
The Fox-platform Mustang brought a more angular design, hatchback and notchback choices, and a long performance legacy. The 5.0-liter V8 became especially associated with this era, alongside the turbocharged SVO.
04 / 1994–2004
Fourth generation · SN95
A rounded redesign modernized the Mustang while retaining rear-wheel drive. A 1999 exterior refresh introduced sharper “New Edge” styling. Notable performance versions included Cobra and Mach 1 models.
05 / 2005–2014
Fifth generation · S197
Retro-inspired proportions echoed the 1960s original. The 2010 styling update and the arrival of the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 for 2011 were major milestones; the Boss 302 and Shelby GT500 also highlighted this generation.
06 / 2015–2023
Sixth generation · S550
A fully independent rear suspension and global-market launch marked a significant evolution. The lineup included EcoBoost four-cylinder and V8 GT models, with performance variants such as the Shelby GT350, GT500 and Mach 1.
07 / 2024–present
Seventh generation · S650
The latest Mustang generation builds on the familiar coupe-and-convertible formula with revised exterior styling, a more digital cockpit and updated powertrains. The Dark Horse expands the modern performance lineup.
